It has long been recognized by competitive athletes that whey proteins are easily metabolized by the body and help to enhance lean muscle mass. Several brands of commercially available whey proteins have been clinically tested and have been found effective in increasing lean muscle mass.
Bioactive whey proteins have been shown to improve muscular performance, peak power, and exercise duration in trained athletes. In a study of 20 healthy young adult athletes (10 women and 10 men) conducted by Lands and co-workers, and published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, a bioactive whey protein supplement (20 grams per day) significantly increased exercise capacity in these trained athletes by an additional 13 percent (P < 0.02) versus placebo.
Which type of whey protein was used in the above studies? The specific type is very important, because not all whey proteins will yield these results. More information on this subject is in the Members Section.
